Tourism in Sisteron
The citadel is certainly the touristic pearl of Sisteron: perched on a rock it offers a circuit with unexpected discoveries. From the top of the citadel you will have a stunning view of the whole city and the river Durance. The visit of this site offers a great moment of pleasure. The cathedral, the small prison, impressive buildings with its medieval, as well as modern architecture, the museums and an open-air theater where the festival “the night of the Citadel” takes place in July.
Between the citadel and the Durance river, you will discover the old historical town, which testifies the glorious past of the city. This part of the town represents perfectly the history of the region. It is a real pleasure to stroll along the narrow steep roads, between the old houses and the medieval walls, to discover small fountains, old convents and shopping streets. In summertime, you can take the tourist train to visit the old town. It will bring you to the heights of the town and to the entrance of the citadel.
Every two years a medieval festival is organized and the whole town is decorated in a medieval ambiance.
The little Jabron valley, nearby Sisteron, is also a place full of charm to visit. Crossed by a river and dominated by the Lure mountain, with its cliffs and beautiful forests, the valley offers attractive villages, splendid scenic areas with miles of paths for walking and cycling and even a family ski station in winter on the top of the mountain.
